We’d like to take a moment to recognize the people who gave their lives in service to our country – – the reason we celebrate Memorial Day on the last Monday of every May.

Memorial Day began when a general called for a holiday to honor soldiers who were killed in the Civil War. On the first official Decoration Day, the graves of 20,000 soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery were decorated, and over the years, the event spread across the nation. In 1890, every Union state had a Decoration Day, but it wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress.

As you enjoy the company of friends and family or enjoy the first long weekend of the summer, we hope you will also take a moment to reflect on the brave men and women who gave their lives to our country. If your town has a parade or wreath ceremony, we hope you’ll come out to show your support.

We wish you a fun and safe Memorial Day Weekend with friends, family and loved ones.
