Veterans Day is a day to remember those who have served and sacrificed, as well as their loved ones and others who aide in the daily battles of those who have survived and returned. Many of our Veterans return from service with various impairments, some with visible disabilities. So many more suffer in silence and have tried to return to civilian life only to suffer immense challenges in adapting and thriving.
Many years ago, I had a client who returned from Vietnam to thrive as a Financial Comptroller, and who kept the PTSD demons at bay for as long as he could. When he no longer could handle his day to day functionality, despite mental health care and treatment, he filed a claim under his Long Term Disability insurance policy. Inexplicably, his claim for disability insurance benefits was denied.
In learning more about his situation, it was understandable why was suffering. His recount of events that led to his trauma made Rambo seem like Bambi, as his depiction of carrying fallen comrades to safety through massive battles and relentless enemy fire.
He clearly had suffered greatly and I was glad to be able to get closure to his claim and allow him the freedom from being under the microscope of an adversarial LTD company.
This client is not alone – there are so many who suffer these traumas – and we should do more than take one day to thank the brave men and women who keep us safe. For Veterans Day, we thank those who have the bravery and pride to serve our country well.
